Club Members,

I wanted to discuss with you all some key changes to the 4-Mile Parking area and SP trail above Sunlight Mountain.

For those of you who do not know the Mt. Sopris Rec Riders parking lot, snowcat building and a portion of the SP trailhead are situated on private property.  Throughout the history of the club the property owners have generously allowed us to utilize their land.  Over the past year we have been working on a lease agreement to maintain the club parking and snowcat storage facility.  The owners were  very receptive and welcomed the clubs future operations on their land.  Unfortunately, for the club, the land has been for sale and a party has come forward to purchase it.  As of this time we do not know who the purchaser is though we understand that they do not wish to have the Mt. Sopris Rec Riders on the property.

What will this mean for you?

-Parking: Though we are attempting every available means to maintain the club member parking lot our expectation is that this winter the MSRR parking lot will be closed.  Of course, the lower public parking lot will remain open though it will be substantially more congested.

-Snowcat Building: We are trying to work out a deal to maintain the snowcat building on the site until the summer of 2014 as we will be counting on your help to relocate it.

-SP Trail: The first section of the SP trail to 4-Mile park was situated on private property.  This is no longer a viable route.  Next week we will be meeting with the Forest Service to review an alternate route for the SP trail.  We will keep you informed as this develops.

This transition will be painful and frustrating for us all.  Maintaining patience and cooperation during this process is a monumental feat though I must ask it  of every club member. As information becomes available we will send it out.  As always your support is all that keeps this club afloat.  If you are interested in helping or would like to discuss the issues please feel free to give me a call or reply back to this email.

Thanks

2013 SnoScoopHistorically speaking…. In the making….

NO say it isn’t so!!!  Is it really that time already??? The last Scoop means …. That the season is almost over??!!!  Say it isn’t so!  Okay I know all good things must come to an end to begin again.  I wish I could say this was the best season ever and I certainly hope for you that it was.  But in some aspects as I look back, any season we can ride, be with friends and family, enjoy our public lands, and come together as a community well I’d have to say yes it was a good season.

Promenade:

For me this was an educational season in many ways.  One way in particular was why our club exists.  As a relatively new member (of only 5 yrs) this club was already established and full on functioning when my husband and I joined.  If any of you follow me in “The Scoop” you know how we initially got involved. Donating $3-5 at upper parking lot each time we parked (monies going toward grooming costs) but if you were a member it was free… it turned out that it was cheaper to be a member as much as we were going.  It also turned out that deciding to make a less expensive decision was the best decision we could have ever done.

Reflect:

We have never been the type to sit around and watch things happen. After the first meeting I already volunteered to write the scoop, then organize parties and fundraisers and gatherings, speak on the radio, manage the website.  I have enjoyed every minute of it … no … really I have.  This has been an amazing opportunity to meet such an amazing group of people, who are equally if not more dedicated in volunteering their time to help maintain and support our trail system and club.  At the time I know for a fact I wasn’t aware of what I was getting myself or my husband into.  Even more so, I didn’t realize I was going to become a part of the history of well anything. And so here we are….

The Real Story:

I was interested in how this all came about and if I wanted to know I had to ask a certain person if he would give me some time.  This certain person invited me to his house and he sat there with his wife and told me story after story showed me picture after picture of how the S-P came to life.

This person was Ernie Gianinetti and his Wife Carol.  They spoke energetically about their accomplishments which really were so amazing I was simply in awe.  They told many stories of how various rides and trips resulted in friendships with others in other counties and how they built the S-P trail.  Remember sleds back then weren’t near what they are now and they forged through what should have been impossible on what they were riding.  Yet they persevered none-the- less.  Ernie and his wife spoke of others in different counties fondly and as they reminisced realized that all those others who painstakingly helped landmark this trail have since passed.  We sat for a brief moment of silence as they reflected and you could see in their eyes that they couldn’t believe that they were all that was let of those friends. It was very humbling and my respect for them and our club solidified.

I asked Ernie how this all came about and what he simply said it was tough times and our economy was down and as a whole they were trying to generate a lively hood and promote community.  They did 10 fold.   I am not sure at the time they knew what they were completely getting into but it felt right and it was bringing the community together.  In the early 80’s around 82 ish Carol Gianinetti says, is when this project started. It took 4 years of planning, mapping, forest service evaluations etc to get all the bits and pieces in place.  As I am listening I realize , I didn’t even live here then,  in 82 I was in 8th grade in Gunnison … 8th grade and here they were creating a landmark.

After mapping, and marking and working with Delta, Grand Junction and Gunnison counties they forged the longest and best trail across multiple national forests, which in 1989 Governor Roy Romer dedicated the trail system.  From the Marion Trail Head to Lands End thanks to volunteers of combined clubs and 35 years later will forever be the S-P trail.

Most who ride these trails or cross country ski, dog sled or whatever usually do so on well groomed trails. Ernie cracked a smile while trying not to laugh about how they “used to groom”.  If you are not a part of a club you probably wouldn’t know what actually goes into grooming a trail. Which we all know is done for anyone who wants to use the trail. Obviously the technology in grooming and cost has changed since 1989.  For the visitor it is a luxury, for the avid it is available, for the member it is a gift.  The clubs combined worked on grooming this massive trail for others so that everyone could enjoy is much appreciated. Grooming this with slower much older models back in the day … like “the grizzly” would take ONE way almost a full day and they would do a straight turn around to get back home.  Others would meet and wait for phone calls to see if he would get back if not ride out whether it was past dark or not to search – no gps locating devices they were the GPS and they counted on each other. Counting on each other is and was and how it should be, counties and other clubs working together.  I believe it is still the same. I have a newfound appreciation and understanding of the importance of what has been accomplished.

The same passion that I have in sharing this sport and outdoor passion is conveyed when listening to the Gianinetti’s.  As Carol was telling me it was amazing how many women back then enjoyed and loved the sport immediately.  I understand that as maybe even April and Kelly from the Glenwood Post Independent experienced.  Man or Woman there is a certain freedom that comes with this sport and matched with the majestic scenery it can only leave one in awe.  With that awe follows on our club emblem RESPECT* PROTECT* AND ENJOY,   Words to live by whether you ride or not.  What a great sport we have and great community.  We all need a little “push” now and then and need to remember the hard work that got us where we are. But also be proud of the that hard work that other volunteers since then who have put in countless hours of time and energy into this Club for the sake of our Community.  Thank you everyone in every club for your support and sharing your lives with us.

Our Club meetings are held regularly in the winter season every 1st Wednesday of each month.  You can visit our website for location or Call me, Jo Hunter at 970-379-5643.  April’s meeting will be an election meeting of officers so if you are interested in any position contact us and join us at our meetings.

Hope to see you at Sunlight Mountain's 2nd annual Poker Run!!!

TRAIL CLOSURES/ UPDATES

Mt. Sopris Rec Riders will be losing a potion of its trail system this year as timbering operations will continue through the winter.  The Forest Service met on Thursday after discussing the issue with different groups that utilize the areas commercially and recreationally.  The recommendation is to close 300 Road (4-Mile Road), 321, 321.1B, 300.4M and portions of 300.4K to snowmobile traffic.  In short all recreational snow traffic will use the SP Trail or Tail 2 (Beaver Creek, Marion Gulch Trailhead) for access.  The Twin Peaks area access will be through Vettor trail (Trail 4A). August 11th 2012 ANNUAL TRAIL CLEAR/CLEAN UP
Hello Everyone,

I hope this note finds everyone having a great summer.  Thankfully we’ve gotten some good moisture here in the last few week to cool things down.  It’s hard to believe we are only a month away from Labor day and 2 months away from the snow show.......... I guess it’s time to do the annual trail cleaning, cook out and camp out in 4 mile.

Well that leads us to Saturday the 11th of August.  If you have either a 4 wheeler, UTV (Prowler, Rhino, Ranger, RZR, ect)  or Dirtbike and a free day on Saturday the 11th we can use your help. The forest service has given us the OK to do our annual trail cleaning.  This is the day we can take 4 wheelers and dirt bikes in and clean certain trails that we normally can only access in the winter or on foot in the summer.  We also need to resign and marker quite a few trails.   Chainsaws, Bars and hammers are handy items if you have them.

The plan now is to meet at 9:30 am on Saturday at the Pumping station on the way to Baylor Park.  From there we will split up into work parties and get things cleaned up.  After we are done we will  have a little cook out and provide hamburgers and brats at the Palazzi’s Camper for anyone who is interested.  If anyone intends to stay for lunch any RSVPS that can be provided will be appreciated but not necessary.

Also some of the club is planning on Camping out Friday and Saturday night. The forest is looking great, green as can be and nothing beats the heat like a night out in the woods.  For more information contact our Vice President, Neil Palazzi.  970-379-4504 or email at    npexc@hughes.net

For any information or questions on the trail cleaning please contact me Sean Martin at 970-379-6927or summitx@frontier.net

Thank you for your support and I hope to see you there.  Additionally we will be having a club meeting at Carol and Steve Burns check our website for details : http://www.mtsoprisrecriders.com/meeting-info.html

Sean Martin
President,
Mt. Sopris Rec Riders

Each year  our club and any one who would like to help takes a weekend to make sure our SP trails are cleared from debris and that diamond trail markers are in good visible condition.  The Club in conjunction with the Forest Service are allowed via special permit to access these trails this one weekend of the year on ATV , Motorcycle or horse. However from past experience ATV is the best avenue.   We will put out an email as the date gets closer of meeting place and time and  of items needed to bring and if you are interested email us at mntsoprisrecriders@gmail.com .  It really is a fun day check photo gallery for past years photos of  trail clearing!!!
